Denicolai & Provoost

Multidisciplinary artists, the Italian-Belgian duo Denicolai & Provoost works with, but not limited to, animation, objects, installations, performance, video and publishing.
They willingly propose collaborative and processual protocols, sometimes on the long term, sometimes in the form of punctual performance, which imply complicities and collaborations with actors who are not necessarily linked to the art world, and who are in full title constituents of the worlds which surround us.
They borrow willingly elements existing in a context to associate, dissociate, assemble them to each other and formulate a language. They function more like intermediaries between the various components of a context, to make them dialogue through their own forms.
It is this position of the intermediary (or of 'director of the real') that interests them the most. What is the role of the artist in the city?
In the aesthetic and political intimacy of their process of artistic digestion, Denicolai & Provoost question the freedom given to artists in our Western, so-called democratic societies. Their work includes the whole spectrum of media coverage possibilities, as tools to create their universe.

The artist duo Denicolai & Provoost has been working together in Brussels since 1997. Simona Denicolai (1972, Milan, IT) and Ivo Provoost (1974, Diksmuide, BE) have exhibited widely in international institutions and galleries.

De multidisciplinaire, Italiaans-Belgische kunstenaars, Denicolai & Provoost, werken met onder andere animatie, objecten, installaties, performances, videokunst en publiceren.

Zij stellen bereidwillig samenwerkings- en procesmatige protocollen voor, soms op lange termijn, soms in de vorm van punctuele prestaties, die complicaties en samenwerkingsverbanden impliceren met actoren die niet noodzakelijkerwijs verbonden zijn met de kunstwereld, en die ten volle deel uitmaken van de ons omringende werelden.

Zij lenen gewillig elementen die in een context bestaan om ze te associëren, te dissociëren, aan elkaar te koppelen en een taal te formuleren. Zij functioneren meer als tussenpersonen tussen de verschillende componenten van een context, om deze door middel van hun eigen vormen tot dialoog te brengen.
Het is deze positie van de tussenpersoon (of van "regisseur van het reële") die hen het meest interesseert. Wat is de rol van de kunstenaar in de stad?
In de esthetische en politieke intimiteit van hun proces van artistieke vertering stellen Denicolai & Provoost de vrijheid in vraag die kunstenaars in onze westerse, zogenaamd democratische samenlevingen krijgen. Hun werk omvat het hele spectrum van media mogelijkheden, als instrumenten om hun universum te creëren.
