The Brussels-based LMNO gallery is pleased to announce its representation of, and a solo exhibition by, the Belgian artist Philippe De Gobert.
Born in Brussels in 1946, Philippe De Gobert has, since the late 1970s, been producing a distinctive body of work at the crossroads of sculpture, architecture and photography. His method, which has remained consistent for over forty years, draws as much on craftsmanship as on illusion: he builds his own models of buildings and interiors, which he then lights and photographs before printing them in large format. This process gives rise to images that lie somewhere between a real place and a memory, between architecture and a dream.
For his first exhibition at the gallery, Philippe De Gobert presents ‘Dedans / Dehors, in which he continues his exploration of the interplay between the interior and exterior of a building, between what the walls conceal and what the light reveals, through the poetic and subdued vision of Brussels architecture that has always characterised his work.
The exhibition brings together fourteen large-format photographs, accompanied by a scale model offering a unique insight into the artist's distinctive creative process.
For this series, De Gobert turns his gaze towards Brussels. The images function as a succession of windows opening onto the city: they reveal what usually remains hidden and what is rarely, if ever, shown. It is neither the monumental façades nor the iconic views that take centre stage, but rather the other side of the urban landscape: rear façades, inner courtyards and spaces hidden from public view. Together, these photographs form a striking portrait of Brussels – at once sociological, architectural and poetic.
The models created by the artist form the starting point for his photographic practice. Philippe De Gobert first creates a model of a fictional space or a location inspired by a real environment. These are often artists' studios or iconic buildings. He favours minimalist, uncluttered interiors bathed in light. The model is then set up in his studio, where it is lit like a film set. With the precision of an architectural photographer, he takes photographs which he subsequently prints in large format.

De Brusselse galerie LMNO kondigt een solotentoonstelling aan van de Belgische kunstenaar Philippe De Gobert.
Philippe De Gobert, geboren in Brussel in 1946, ontwikkelt sinds het einde van de jaren 1970 een uniek oeuvre op het snijvlak van beeldhouwkunst, architectuur en fotografie. Zijn werkwijze, die al meer dan veertig jaar onveranderd is gebleven, heeft zowel iets ambachtelijks als iets illusoirs: hij bouwt zelf maquettes van gebouwen en interieurs, die hij vervolgens belicht en fotografeert, waarna hij ze op groot formaat afdrukt. Uit dit proces ontstaan beelden die het midden houden tussen de werkelijke plek en de herinnering, tussen architectuur en de droom ervan.
De tentoonstelling omvat veertien grootformaatfoto's, vergezeld van een maquette die een uniek inzicht biedt in het bijzondere creatieve proces van de kunstenaar.
Voor deze eerste tentoonstelling in de galerie presenteert Philippe De Gobert de tentoonstelling Dedans / Dehors, waarin hij zijn verkenning voortzet van wat zich afspeelt tussen de binnen- en buitenkant van een gebouw, tussen wat de muren verbergen en wat het licht onthult.
Voor deze serie richt De Gobert zijn blik op Brussel. De beelden fungeren als een reeks open vensters op de stad: ze onthullen wat gewoonlijk verborgen blijft en wat zelden, of zelfs nooit, wordt getoond. Het zijn niet de monumentale gevels of de iconische uitzichten die centraal staan, maar de achterkant van het stedelijke decor: achtergevels, binnenplaatsen en ruimtes die aan het publieke oog onttrokken zijn. Samen vormen deze foto's een aangrijpend portret van Brussel, dat tegelijkertijd sociologisch, architecturaal en poëtisch is.
De door de kunstenaar gemaakte maquettes vormen het uitgangspunt van zijn fotografische praktijk. Philippe De Gobert creëert eerst een model van een fictieve ruimte of een plek die geïnspireerd is op een echte omgeving. Vaak gaat het om kunstenaarsateliers of iconische architectuur. Hij geeft de voorkeur aan strakke, sobere en met licht doordrenkte interieurs. De maquette wordt vervolgens in zijn studio opgesteld, waar ze wordt belicht als een filmdecor. Met de precisie van een architectuurfotograaf maakt hij opnames die hij daarna op groot formaat afdrukt.
Met ‘Dedans / Dehors' onthult Philippe De Gobert niet alleen een onbekend Brussel, maar ook het vermogen van de fotografie om de grenzen tussen werkelijkheid en constructie te vervagen. Zijn werk balanceert tussen document en fictie, tussen observatie en verbeelding, en nodigt de bezoeker uit om de stad met een nieuwe blik te herontdekken.
