Among the Leaves is the first solo exhibition by François Génot (1981, Fr) in Belgium. For his first collaboration with LMNO the artist took his inspiration from a homonymous series of photographs (Among the Leaves), which allows us to access his practice by way of different projects. These projects all hinge on a series of holistic protocols that take into account both the finished object and the materials, the process and the location in which they were created.
The natural elements are both signified and signifier, as in L’hôtel aux oiseaux [The Bird Hotel], a large-scale figurative charcoal drawing presenting a copse awash with ivy, for which the charcoal was produced with ivy found on that very spot. This functions as a total immersion in the landscapes invested, a homage rendered to those places, their memory inscribed in those sticks of carbon. A second charcoal drawing was made on the very wall, from a charcoal drawing of a Buddleja found in a piece of Brussels industrial fallow land on Avenue des Croix de Guerre. This pure carbon monochrome discards both paper and figuration to give visibility to the vibration of that location and to the ghostly traces of its surface through the testimony of that ‘butterfly bush’ transformed into a tool. A series of drawings made with frozen ink are also presented, a magical process called ‘Gélugraphie’, as well as a mysterious natural writing on wood, in the work Xylo (Hylesinus). You will also encounter a dainty installation of a faience of leaves of wild bramble leaves, Ronces [Blackberry Bushes], and also part of the series of photographs entitled Among the Leaves.
François Génot borrows his attitude and the momentum of his approach from the resistance and proliferation of living beings. He is developing a sensitive, energetic formal language which is patterned by the experience of places. His attention to the wild nature of everyday occurrences in our anthropised spaces opens for him some doors into the human, animal, plant or mineral worlds at play, with which he attempts to find new ways of coexisting and sharing.
François Génot lives and works in the East of France. He has been active on the international art scene since 2005, and has secured numerous residencies and exhibitions. Among others he has collaborated with the Fondation François Schneider in Wattwiller, the CIAP – Île de Vassivière, the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, the CACLB in Montauban in Belgium, the Saarlandisches Künstlerhaus in Saarbrücken, Germany, and with Langage Plus in Alma in Quebec. In 2020 and 2021 his work was included in the collections of the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg and in the FRAC Alsace. He has taught drawing at the École Supérieure d’Art de Lorraine since 2016. In 2023 he will develop an extensive project with the FRAC Alsace round the issues of ferality. He will also be in residence in the Ferme Asile in Sion, in Valais, Switzerland, and he will present two monographic exhibitions, in Engramme, Quebec, and in the BHBK in Saarbrücken, Germany, and take part in a group exhibition with the association Fertile.
